Earthquake: Islamic group requests that the Buhari administration and wealthy Nigerians send relief supplies to Turkey and Syria.

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), a civil liberties organisation, has asked the Nigerian government, humanitarian organisations, and

wealthy individuals to send relief materials to Turkiye and Syria, where an earthquake has killed over 28,000 people.

On behalf of the organisation, Professor Ishaq Akintola, Executive Director of MURIC, urged the
government and the international

community, particularly the United
Nations (UN), to mobilise relief materials for the two countries on Sunday, February 12, 2023.

"A massive earthquake struck the southern part of Turkiye and northern Syria five days ago," according to the
full statement. More than 28,000

people have died so far, and
thousands more have been injured. The cost is anticipated.

"This natural disaster has left MURIC in great distress. We are heartbroken. In this hour of need, we
stand by the Turkiye people. We are
surrounded by the grief that is currently sweeping Turkiye and Syria.

"In particular, we share the agony of our very kind friends from Turkiye who reside in Nigeria, running schools, hospitals and building

boreholes all over Nigeria. MURIC is deeply worried about the fate of their families back home in Turkiye at this crucial period. It is ironical that a

foreign humanitarian group that is offering health and educational

services to Nigerians has suffered such a gargantuan calamity. It hurts us to the marrows.

"Yet as Muslims we must accept the earthquake as the will of Allah. It has happened and we must stand shoulder to shoulder with the

victims. We are duty bound to mobilise empathy and kind words capable of generating succour for the victims.

"As a result, we urge the Federal Government of Nigeria (FG), humanitarian organisations, and wealthy Nigerians to send relief

supplies to Turkiye and Syria with military dispatch. Let us start with humanity.

"MURIC extends its condolences to Mr. Hidayet Bayraktar, the Ambassador of Turkiye in Nigeria, the leader and members of the

Hizmet Movement, NUSRET in Nigeria, the authorities and staff of the Nizamiye Hospital and Nile

University, Abuja. In the same vein, we express our condolences to Syria's Ambassador in Nigeria, Mr. Mohammed Abo Serriah, and the Syrian community."

"We appreciate what you have been doing for Nigerians," MURIC said in a message to members of the Hizmet Movement and NUSRET in Nigeria. We are here for you during this difficult time.
